National Grid as a whole operates over 9,000 miles of transmission and delivers electricity and natural gas to areas throughout the Northeast including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. National Grid USA is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts but is part of a larger company, National Grid plc, which is headquartered in London, England providing electricity and gas to customers throughout England.
Eversource (formerly NSTAR) - The Eversource area that was formerly NSTAR is the region of Eastern and Central Massachusetts. Eversource provides retail electricity and natural gas to 1.4 million customers in this region including the Boston urban area.
NSTAR (now Eversource) was formed in 1999 by the merger of BEC Energy and Commonwealth Energy System. In April 2012, NSTAR became a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities and in February 2015, Northeast Utilities and all of its operating companies including Western Massachusetts Electric (WMECO), Public Service New Hampshire, Connecticut Light and Power, Yankee Gas, and NSTAR Gas and Electric, became one large utility company known as Eversource Energy.
Eversource (formerly Western Massachusetts Electric WMECo) – Western Massachusetts Electric Co. (WMECo) was started in 1886 and merged with Eversource Energy (formerly Northeast Utilities) in 2012. They provide electricity to over 210,000 customers in Western Massachusetts including the counties of Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire.
Eversource (WMECo) customers are all in deregulated states where residents and businesses can choose what supplier and rate they want for electricity or gas supply and lower their utility bills. Unitil - Unitil’s operating utilities serve approximately 102,500 electric customers and 70,000, natural gas customers in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
